In the old days my favorite getaway spot was Bodega Bay.  Schoolhouse Beach is an isolated stretch of sand, accessible by a fairly steep trail off of Highway 1, that was rarely occupied.  Most week days we would find ourselves the only humans in sight.  This isolated spot is no longer as isolated as more people have discovered it.  In addition, one of the best eating places, made famous in the movie “The Birds”, has been remodeled and converted from a great restaurant into a “Denny’s” style seafood joint.  So now our getaways take place in Half Moon Bay.

The past few years, actually almost fifteen, we have slipped away to the Beach House at Half Moon Bay.  One of the advantages of this is that it is only a 45 minute drive from home.  But the best thing is that for the last three years right next door is Sam’s Chowder House.   We can walk out of the Beach House, walk about 100 yards and walk into the restaurant.  Not only is the food incredible but the view is spectacular.  So now rather than spending the afternoon sitting on the beach drinking wine, we find ourselves sitting on the outside deck of Sam’s drinking wine.

The other great thing about being here is the room at the Beach House.  Lying in bed looking out to the ocean is how I would love to wake up every day, unfortunately it is only when we stay here that we can do that.  The room designers new what they were doing and obviously loved the water.  The only downside is that we used to be able to sit on the deck and smoke cigars, since our last visit they have made the hotel a totally non-smoking place, including outside.

Oh, I bet you are wondering about me sleeping with Bruce Willis.   In 2001 during the filming of the movie “The Bandits“, starring Bruce Willis, Billy Bob Thornton, and Cate Blanchett they stayed at the Beach House.  Bruce was in room 304 and the last time we stayed here we were in room 304.  Okay, so it was ten years apart and I was only in the same bed but I bet it got you to read this!
